The food movement around eating locally-produced food is based on the idea of “food miles” and understanding sustainability. Generally, the shorter distance between producer and consumer means a lesser impact to the environment.

Industrial-raised lamb is often cheaper than traditional farming because of the lack of space, labor, and feed costs. It also provides a consistent supply of meat to consumers. However, there are many risks associated with industrial-raised meat as well such as environmental damage, animal cruelty, and antibiotic resistance.
In contrast to other meats, primal cuts of lamb is naturally low in fat and cholesterol, and has a high nutrient density.
Flock Size and Location
Sheer numbers of sheep in British Columbia have varied over the years, but on average, the province’s average sheep flock is somewhere between 40 and 50 sheep and lamb. Flocks in the Okanagan, Kootenays, Cariboo and Peace River regions are usually a little bit larger than those found on southern coastal regions of the province. This is because lambs from small scale producers are common around these areas and have been around for decades.
